When Prince George was born, the columnist Liz Smith and I had an interesting exchange about his future. I, of course, wanted to see his feet. Feet are destiny! Were his feet like his mother’s, good upper-middle-working-class feet or like his maternal grandmother, Princess Diana’s, whose aristocratic high arches were, you might say, her downfall. Diana’s arches were so high, her feet couldn’t ever really touch the ground. And she longed for the grounding. She looked for it everywhere, didn’t she, all her tragically short life?
